This is your hub for weekly restaurant, bar, and other hospitality recommendations of the week!
Given that this blog will largely surround hospitality, real estate development, and news in those areas, I found it only fit to give you some real-life recommendations for you to check out on a weekly basis.
Week 2: Sushi Gen
Ever had strip mall sushi? Put any and all inhibitions you have about it behind before walking into Sushi Gen. Upon entering the curtains that lead to Gen's sushi bar you are transported to Tokyo, soft light wood, traditional tapestries, and the smell of sushi rice and sake fill the room. The staff is stern yet polite, they take their craft very seriously and for good reason: the product is phenomenal. They feature fresh uni from Santa Barbara, snapper from Hokkaido, and some of the best toro I've ever had. The ordering style is simple: you look at your sushi chef and tell him what you want, when I say you can't go wrong I mean it. Everything ranging from salmon belly to yellowtail to uni was phenomenal, even their soft egg pudding was fantastic. There's an age old phrase, "good people attract good people." I think the same holds true for restaurants, everyone in Sushi Gen was so kind - offering recommendations, a taste of their carpaccio, shoot my friends and I were bought three drinks each by a couple sitting next to us. Moral of the story: get your butt to Sushi Gen ASAP.
Week 1: Santouka Ramen
Nestled within Mitsuwa Market - a Japanese market in West Los Angeles - sits a tiny little ramen shop. There are only four people working, all of them experts at their craft. One handles cooking the meat, another the broth, a third specializes on noodles, and the last man the register. The spicy miso salt ramen is unlike any other ramen I have ever tasted before - think miso soup on steroids. And after you finish your little bowl of heaven, head over to the market to grab fresh wasabi root, yuzu, or browse their selection of other fantastic Japanese goods.
